Cavewoman Cartoon page by PaulRenaud Cavewoman Cartoon page by PaulRenaud
This is something different. I had been wanting to draw a story that way for a long time. I like the fact that there's no text or dialogue, so that the storytelling does all the work. This is something I'm always trying to achieve in all my work tho it's not always possible. I like the feeling that you can look at the pages and get the story without actually reading the texts.

I have a lot of respect and admiration for the artists working in the "animated style" for that. They usually go to town to produce a simple direct storytelling that the reader get in 1 second.

This is page 1 of a story published in Cavewoman : Jungle Jam #1
Here's page 2 and3 : [link]
Here's page 4 and 5 : [link]

Hey paul. I really like the comic/animated twist to the work here. And your right, it's an interesting, and more direct way to work. Coming from a background in animation, it's great to work this way because you don't have to worry so much about the technical difficulties of perfectly drawing and rendering everything, and you can finally just relax and let the pictures tell the story. At one point when DC Comics was doing "Batman Adventures" as a comic, it became very popular and was outselling the regular Batman title. I'll check out the links to see more of the story!

Thank you Dave! I wish they'd do more of the regular mainstream series in a cartonny style.

Awesome page--blends a realistic figure with the cartoony feel very well. I would love to see more of this.

That's a great page, Paul---The storytelling is so smooth, the art is gorgeous, and I particularly like the way you set up the first panel. Looks like you had a lot of fun with the story and the style.

Thanks Drew! Yeah, it was a lot of fun..and it's amazing to be able to produce a 5 page story in 2 days (especially for me...I'm not of the fast kind). But this style allowed me to draw real fast and it was somehow liberating.

I liked doing that.

In fact I'm also working that way (with gray tones) on the book I'm doing now. It's my "realistic style" tho, and the book will be later colored by someone else. But doing grays like this is a way to establish the light sources and some kind of rendering before the coloring process.
I'll try to post a page of the new stuff so you guys can tell me if you think it works.

Yeah I just saw that page; it looks really sharp.

Gray tones really do help with giving the work that extra bit of solidarity and realism. In any case, your work is great Paul.
