New project page1 by PaulRenaud New project page1 by PaulRenaud
Here's a preview page for the book I'm doing now for Dynamite.

It's a little experiment since I've decided to work with just lines+gray tones. I cannot do the coloring myself, so doing grays like this is a way to establish the light source and do some kind of rendering before the coloring process. We haven't talked about a colorist yet, but I wish we can find someone who can deal with this stuff (meaning no over rendering or dark tones).

I think the style works with the subject matter. It's gives some kind of a Manara vibe. It's me trying to channel my European nature into my work for US comics. I had to search for references everywhere, but it's fun.
Hope it works.

Thanks Eric! I gathered as many references as possible. From pictures to models, I used all I could find (I was also lucky to have a friend going there for holidays and bringing back lots of pics for me).

Thanks! I cannot talk too much about this right now. I can just tell you the book is called ATHENA, and I believe it will be solicited soon.
I won't be doing as much work on this book as I was supposed to, as I'm moving on another project. I wish I could have done the whole Athena books, but there will be just a few pages of mine in each issue.

Oh well Athena is my fave goddess, so I'll keep my eyes open for this book. Any hint on when it's gonna happen?

Thanks!
The tough part was finding the right references for the architectures.
On this first page I wanted it to be as faithful as possible to the reconstitution on ancient Athens and on Acropolis. I've allowed myself to do more made up backgrounds in the following pages.

Thanks a lot for the compliment, but unfortunately I'm not sure this is an option for Dynamite. In comics, color sells better than B&W (exception made for Sin City).

There's nothing blasphemous my friend.
You hit the similarity of that statue to the bone.
Especially ob the cheeks

Great page, Paul...

Reminds me of the Saint-Seiya (Les Chevaliers du Zodiaque ;) ) series, with Athena statue and stuff... ^_^

Can't wait to see the next pages... ;)

Thanks!
I remember watching Saint-Seiya back then. I didn't know then I wouldspend so much time drawing statues and greek temples some 15 years later :)
The Athena statue here is my take on the Athina Polias ("Athena of the city") statue in the National Archaeological Museum, Athens. And before anyone tells me, I messed a lot with the face to make her look more "modern". Blasphemy!
